The Canberra Food and Wine Club originated in February 1953. The idea of the club occurred during we may (for want of more appropriate words) call a protracted tasting session of three nights, the subject of which was a 10 gallon wooden keg of Eckhoff's Rutherglen Burgundy. The participants of this tasting session were three of the Club's founding member - John Cruickshank, Johnny Ruegg and Rudi Brunnschweiler.

Some time into the night, and well after a fine dinner, when well mellowed, the idea emerged to organise such pleasures in a more permanent manner.

The Club founders started with a strong vision, to foster good food, good wine and good fellowship.

This spirit continues to be the driving force behind every event the Club runs. No event is run by an anonymous group, it is run by Members for Members. No event would come about without the Members buying the food, organising the wine and setting up the tables. Every cooking class, dinner and wine tasting starts with an idea from one Member (or a small group). An event is a success because members freely give up their time and contribute their skill to ensure that everyone enjoys themselves.
